Active Inclusive offers individuals with disabilities and their families a huge range of fun and friendly sessions. Active Inclusive programmes range from specific activities to inclusive family sessions - and support for those wanting to become more active.

Our Active Inclusive sessions take place in accessible locations, providing participants with a place to learn exciting new skills and in some cases enjoy competitive sports.

We also work with many schools across the north west helping everybody move with a wide range of different sessions.

It doesn't matter who you are - we've got something to get you active!

Active Inclusive sessions

How to take part in an Active Inclusive session

A couple of things you need to know:

  • Most of our sessions are for all ages. Those sessions that take place at Wigan Youth Zone are for people 25 and under.
  • Virtual Tours. For sessions at Howe Bridge Leisure Centre, Leigh Leisure Centre and Wigan Life Centre you can visit our virtual tours.
  • Booking your place. We need you to book your place to make sure there are enough spaces to go round. This applies to all sessions except those in the Get Out Get Active programme, which are drop-in activities where you can simply turn up without letting us know in advance. You can book your place on an Active Inclusive session in a couple of ways:

Get Out Get Active (GOGA)

Climbing walls with GOGA

GOGA is a national programme to support disabled and non-disabled people to take part in fun and inclusive activities together. Wigan is one of 18 localities delivering GOGA across the UK.

The local programme consists of weekly activities, events and volunteering opportunities. Weekly sessions cater for a range of ages and abilities, including some family activity sessions. Details of all weekly sessions can be found on our activity calendar.

Inclusive Children and Young People

We have a range of activities for children and young people aged 5 – 19 years. Activities include Rebound Therapy, Wheels for All, Multi Sports and Dance. Sessions are delivered weekly during school term times, we also offer a programme during each school holiday period, please see our activity calendar for more details.

We deliver inclusive PE and extra-curricular sports sessions within local schools.

As part of a local partnership group we deliver inclusive events for children and young people on a regular basis. These include Just Join In festivals, giving young people with a disability the opportunity to try out different sports in an accessible environment. We also host the annual Greater Manchester Disability Games for secondary schools across the boroughs of Greater Manchester.

Active Choices

Active Choices is a diverse programme of activities for anyone aged 16 years and over who requires additional support to become active. This could be due to a learning disability, physical disability, sensory impairment, mental health condition, dementia and / or autistic spectrum condition.
We aim to improve access and choice to get more people active throughout the Wigan Borough.

Schools and Groups

The PE/Sports coaching programme has greatly enhanced the pupils experience and staff learning. All PE lessons are effective and highly motivating for both staff and pupils. The coach has excellent skills in working with pupils with learning difficulties and has high expectations of pupils, which has led to fantastic pupil achievement.

Inclusive Clubs

Our Inclusive Clubs Initiative aims to support local sports clubs and community groups to improve their accessibility and inclusivity. We offer support to write funding applications, improve physical and social access to activities, as well as providing support with training and promotion of sessions.

Frequently asked questions

What is Rebound Therapy?

Rebound Therapy refers to 1-1 activities on a trampoline ranging from relaxing and stretching exercises to recreational trampolining. Qualified instructors work with individuals to develop a programme of activities. Participants also have the opportunity to achieve awards in trampolining, following the Winstrada grading system.

Do I need to book?

Booking is essential for certain activities such as Rebound Therapy, Wheels for All and Supervised Gym as well as for all school holiday sessions. Although some sessions do not require booking a place, we advise that you contact us to find the most appropriate activity to attend.

How much do sessions cost?

The price of each activity varies, all details can be found on the calendar of sessions.

Are sessions suitable for wheelchair users?

Sessions are suitable and accessible for all individuals, including those who use a wheelchair. Some activities may require transfer, and hoists are available for some activities (including Rebound Therapy)

Can support workers and family members join in with Active Inclusive sessions?

We welcome support workers and family members to take part in activities, where appropriate, some of our sessions are open family sessions where all are encouraged to take part. In addition, we offer a Lifestyle+1 scheme for those in a supporting role.
