The restoration of Mesnes Park

The restoration of Mesnes Park is now complete, thanks to a £6.1m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

What happened

The Coalbrookdale Fountain was removed from the park in 1921, but summer 2013 saw a brand new replica take pride of place in the park.

The new Coalbrookdale Fountain

Painstakingly made to original plans by local artisans, the fountain here today is a faithful reproduction of the original. Our Pulham water feature, complete with waterfall, has now also been restored back to it’s former glory.

Generations of locals have visited the park to rub the ‘lucky foot’ of the Sir Francis Sharpe Powell monument. As a result, a hole appeared in his shoe! Sir Francis’s shoes are now watertight once again and have been re-bronzed.

The pavilion building now offers a modern café facility with two floors of seating run by Frederick’s Ice Cream. The Dalton steps leading up to the pavilion have been repaired and the missing urns replaces.

Music lovers can now enjoy concerts in the band stand and a new power supply has brought it into the twenty first century.

Other areas include:

• A brand new play area (funded by Big Lottery)
• Conversion of the Playshack into a flexible activities space
• Restoration of the shelter building
• Restoration of Entrance Lodge and brand new training centre
• Repair and restoration to the Bowling Pavilion
• Brand new site services (water, gas, electricity) throughout the park
• Restoration and improvement to all entrances
• Repair and restoration of footpaths
• Introduction of lighting along key routes
• New signage, bins and benches
• An enhanced soft and hard landscape maintenance programme
• A volunteer and training plan to develop and promote volunteering and training opportunities within the park
