Shine a light, light your bike!

WINTER is coming…

And to keep you going during the dark months of the year, we have come up with a really bright idea.

Cyclists in Wigan Borough can claim free lights for their bikes at special events in October and November. The initiative is aimed at helping to keep cyclists safe and seen at night and also to encourage more people to enjoy a healthy active lifestyle during the bleak mid-winter.

Inspiring healthy lifestyles Sports Engagement Officer Richard Smith explains: “Cycling is an incredibly beneficial form of exercise and a great introduction to a healthy lifestyle. It’s easy on your joints and when you are riding you are also taking in the fresh air and some of our borough’s beautiful landscapes.”

“However, it’s really important that cyclists stay safe on our roads during the winter months and one of the best ways to do this is to make sure you can see and be seen.

“Our great giveaway means that anyone can get a set of lights simply by bringing their bike along to one of our events. There will also be the chance to pick up some great cycling tips and advice and even go on a guided tour ride.”

Inspiring healthy lifestyles runs a host of cycling events and guided rides at locations across the borough.

Newcomers to the Active Outdoors sessions can even hop on board with the programme of one-to-one training sessions, small groups rides and longer countryside cycles free for the first 12 weeks.

Cyclist can choose to take part in one-hour ‘steady’ rides or put the pedal to the metal with ‘challenging’ two-hour 20 mile spins.

Richard added: “Cycling is a great way to get fit because you don’t need lots of space or lots of equipment and you can go out when it suits you most. If you join one of our group rides it’s also a great way of socialising and seeing a bit more of the countryside.”

To claim a free set of lights, all cyclists have to do is take their bike along to one of the sessions.

They are:

Norley Hall Woodland Park Playground on Wednesday 24 October from 2pm until 4pm.

Haigh Woodland Park Courtyard on Saturday 27 October between 9am and 1pm.

Wigan Town Centre on Saturday 3 November between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Leigh Town Centre, Bradshawgate, on Saturday 10 November between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

The Wigan and Leigh town centre events also include a free one hour guided tour ride.

You can also claim your lights by visiting the Gearing Up Bike Workshop in The Brick Works on Hodson Street, Wigan, from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

Or you can go on one of Inspiring healthy lifestyles’s weekly rides and get your shiny new lights at the same time!

The free bike light initiative is being funding by On Your Bike which is part of Wigan Council’s Deal for Communities Investment Fund, the scheme is also supported by Gearing Up cycle workshop.

Cllr Jim Moodie, who is the council’s Lead Member for Leisure and Public Health, said: “When winter comes there’s a great temptation to go into hibernation and wait for the warmer weather to return but by doing that you are missing out on some of the most beautiful months of the year.

“We want to residents of Wigan Borough to be healthy and active all year round and there’s no better way of blowing away the cobwebs than getting on your bike. We also want more people to see taking the bike as a real alternative to the car, especially for short journeys."

“Of course safety is our main concern which is why we are giving away sets of bike lights to anyone who wants them. Whether you cycle for pleasure or your use your bike for the daily commute, it’s vitally important that motorists can see you and you can see them.”

Cllr Moodie added: “Joining one of Inspiring healthy lifestyles’ training courses or group rides will also give you some great tips about how to stay safe on your bike so get into gear and get signed up.”
