Making A Splash In Hindley

Residents enjoyed a swim at Hindley Pool on Saturday as the centre was officially opened.

Representatives from Wigan Council, Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles and the local community celebrated the opening with a tour of the pool and residents were invited to come along and have a free swim.

Hindley Swimming Club has also returned to its home water, and a full programme has been in place since from Sunday 27th January.

Over the years thousands have learnt to swim at Hindley Pool, attended club lessons and enjoyed casual swims and school trips there.

One family in particular remains prominent in the history of Hindley Pool. Inspiring healthy lifestyles’ Ruth Hulme steps in as manager of the building this week and as she does, she follows in the footsteps of her mum, Eileen Blake. Eileen started working as a pool attendant from its opening in 1970, in 1990 she became duty manager of the pool until she retired in 2007. During this time, Ruth’s dad, David Blake had started working for the leisure department as a relief manager and became centre manager of both Hindley Leisure Centre and Hindley Pool from 1999 until 2003.

Ruth says: “They were legends of the pool! Half of Hindley still remembers Eileen being the manager.”

“I feel immensely proud to have been given the opportunity to follow in my parent’s footsteps.

“Now, almost 50 years since Hindley Pool opened, and since her mum started working there, Ruth takes the reigns as manager.

Peter Burt, Managing Director of Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles said: “We are delighted to have Hindley Pool up and running again following much needed maintenance. It has been wonderful to see the community able to take full advantage of its offering and enjoy the free swim day on Saturday.”

Leader of Wigan Council, Cllr David Molyneux, said: “It is wonderful to see Hindley Pool open and hosting lessons again. The pool has been open for nearly 50 years and it is great to see its still an important part of the community.”
