Two-wheeled wonders inspired by the Tour de Yorkshire are being invited to sign up for the fourth annual Selby Three Swans Sportive.

The popular event, which saw nearly 1,000 riders take part last year, will take place on Sunday, September 4.

Participants of all abilities are once again invited to choose from three picturesque routes of 30 miles, 66 miles and 106 miles.

The ride is organised by the charity Yorkshire Cancer Research in partnership with Selby Cycling Club, Selby District Council, which has provided a £3,250 grant, and ‘Inspiring healthy lifestyles’, leisure operator for the Council.

As in previous years, Inspiring healthy lifestyles will run the event village on the Abbey pavement to entertain families and supporters while cyclists are out on the ride, and to welcome everyone home again. Mobile climbing wall hire company justClimb will also be present once again with their ever popular climbing wall.

Patsy Robertshaw, Events, Partners and Community Fundraising Manager at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: "Yorkshire is fast becoming one of the top destinations in the world for cycling and we’re excited to be able to offer such a brilliant event in the heart of our region.

"Showcasing the Vale of York’s beautiful countryside and visiting scenic villages on quiet, flat roads, the Selby Three Swans Sportive is perfect for beginners looking for their first sportive and more experienced riders looking for a personal best time.

"This year we’d love as many people as possible to raise some sponsorship for Yorkshire Cancer Research. All money raised will be used to prevent, treat and help people survive cancer in Yorkshire."

Victoria Wignall, from Selby Cycling Club, said: "The Sportive is a great way to encourage people to get on their bike, potentially help riders achieve their first century or just ride that bit further than they usually do. Combining this with raising valuable funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research makes it such a worthwhile event and Selby Cycling Club is proud to be involved."

Selby District Council has supported the sportive financially as part of its plans to raise the profile of the district as a destination for cycling, to support business and to promote cycling as a means of activity to help residents lead a healthy lifestyle.

Councillor David Peart, Lead Councillor for Housing, Leisure, Health and Culture, said: "The Council supports cycling in the district to encourage more people to lead healthier lives. It’s great to see the Selby Three Swans Sportive grow in popularity year by year and we hope for a record number of participants in this year’s edition. Following last month’s Tour de Yorkshire, I hope more people in the district feel inspired to get on a bike and take part in this year’s sportive, raising money for a fantastic cause."

The Selby Three Swans Sportive begins and finishes at the famous Selby Abbey and all participants will receive t-shirts and medals. For more information, please visit
