Top spot for Wigan sports stars

WIGAN'S sporting community dominated at this year's Greater Manchester Sports Awards - winning four of the eight trophies up for grabs.

The 17th annual Greater Manchester Sports Awards, held on Friday at Emirates Old Trafford, celebrated the outstanding commitment and achievements made in physical activity and sport across the Greater Manchester area.

Big wins for Wigan saw awards presented to:

  • Coach of the Year - Rick Atkinson - Wigan Wasps Swimming Club
  • Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year - Daniel Dawoud - GB Wheelchair Rugby
  • Sports Achiever of the Year - Danni Williams - Musuko Karate Academy
  • Unsung Hero - Mike Hack - Astley and Tyldesley Cycling Club

Winners from the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester competed across eight separate awards on the night with Wigan's grassroots sports' stars represented by winners from the annual Believe Sports Awards.

Pete Burt, Managing Director of Inspiring healthy lifestyles, who organise the Believe Sports Awards, said: "It was a wonderful night and we are delighted that Wigan won four out of eight awards.

"We're really proud to support local athletes and volunteers across Wigan and Leigh as part of our day-to-day operations. It is great to see their talents and commitment recognised at this regional level."

Finalists from Wigan also included:

  • School Commitment to PE & Sport Award - Garret Hall Primary School
  • Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award - Steven Johnson - Leigh Leisure Centre
  • Volunteer of the Year - Pete Prescott - Leigh Amateur Boxing Club
  • Club of the Year - Leigh Genesis FC

Donna Hall, Wigan Council's Chief Executive, said: "The success of Wigan Borough's athletes and coaches at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards is testament to the depth of talent here and highlights what a successful sporting area we are. Through The Deal we are proud to support hundreds of local clubs at grassroots level which help nurture talent and get thousands of young people active, healthy and enjoying sport."
