Statement from Managing Director Pete Burt

To our members, customers, staff and everyone that has stood by us,

I would first like to thank you for your support over the past few months. These have been challenging times for many of us and your ongoing commitment to Inspiring healthy lifestyles has been both moving and provided great motivation to all of us here.

As is the case with all across the leisure industry, we were disappointed to the hear the Governments decision not to open Leisure Centres and gyms as early as we had anticipated.

At Inspiring healthy lifestyles we have worked closely with ukactive, our local authority partners and sports governing bodies to ensure our facilities are as safe as possible for when our staff and customers can return. Our teams have worked tirelessly to prepare our sites for re-opening in a way that would support our employees return to work and thousands of customers return to exercise.

Our Leisure Centres provide huge amounts of support to the communities they sit within, providing exercise, support and safe spaces for many. Physical activity is a fundamental part in building and supporting the physical and mental health of the population and the longer these sites remain closed, the longer people go without the support their leisure centre and gyms offer.

IHL was established as a registered Charity sixteen years ago. Its’ original purpose continues to underpin our work and is particularly pertinent to the times we are in today: “promotion and preservation of good health through community participation in healthy recreation”.

Our ability to continue to deliver this purpose has been put in jeopardy as the industry feels the financial impact of the restrictions placed on our ability to open. We have done and will continue to do all we can to ensure the security of our colleagues’ jobs and support them to the fullest extent. But the longer we are forced to remain closed, the more difficult this becomes. We at Inspiring healthy lifestyles miss you and everyone here thinks that the Government should quickly change their decision not to open gyms and leisure centres.

We ask you please to support us by signing the petition to have the decision reversed.

We believe the re-opening of leisure centres, gyms and pools across the country is necessary in supporting the mental wellbeing and physical health of the nation.

We believe through greater activity and creativity, people can live happier, healthier lives.

We know we will see you again soon and we know that when that time comes, we will be ready to welcome you back gladly, in safe environments, in the most supportive way we can.

Until then, stay safe, stay active, stay healthy and we will see you soon.

Inspiring healthy lifestyles Managing Director,

Pete Burt
