Talented sports stars raise money for NSPCC

Almost £1,000 has been raised for the NSPCC by the borough’s talented and generous community sports stars.

This year’s Believe Sports Awards, held in October, raised £950 from a raffle held on the evening.

The annual Believe Sports Awards is a celebration of the borough’s home-grown talent, sporting stars of the future and the coaches and volunteers who put thousands of hours of effort into shaping the sporting landscape.

Lynsey Johnson, Head of Wellbeing for Inspiring healthy lifestyles, who organised the evening, said: “The talent of those who attended on the night has been more than matched by their generosity.

“We’re delighted with the amount raised for such a worthy cause.”

Barclays Bank in Wigan matched the amount raised through the raffle and put £1,000 towards the borough’s Believe Talent Fund.

The Believe Talent Fund is for athletes living in the borough who require financial assistance to participate in sport.

Grants of up to £500 are available for a 12-month period for athletes who reside in Wigan and Leigh.

Funding can help with travel, accommodation, competition/training fees and equipment.
