Triple endorsement for Museum of Cannock Chase

The Museum of Cannock Chase has received a trio of plaudits from leading arts, museums and tourism authorities.

Accolades include a fifth consecutive Sandford Award, which is issued by the Heritage Education Trust every five years, and an endorsement from the Arts Council-led Museums Accreditation Scheme. The Museum’s Visitor Attraction Quality Assessment (VAQAS), meanwhile, classifies the Museum as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction’ by Visit England.

Museum Manager Alisa Bellingham said: “These latest awards and accreditations act as welcome recognition of the quality of the facilities and experiences being offered at the Museum of Cannock Chase. It is the fruit of the continued hard work and dedication from our valued workforce as we continue develop our facilities and attractions to best meet the needs of our visitors.”

In their citation, the Sandford Award Judge stated how the museum “had enhanced its recognised expertise in presenting high quality courses over twenty five years”.

They added: “Across these years the museum’s staff members have explored additional areas of interest in order to entice new groups of visitors to learn new facts and skills and to gain great enjoyment in the company of skilled and knowledgeable teachers.

“This is a very friendly education space where a rapport is established from first contact; a rapport that enables quality learning to take place throughout each visit.”

In the summary for the VAQAS award, which passed with a score of 82 per cent, inspectors said: “It was good to hear that visitor numbers had increased during 17/18 and that some of the events in particular had been extremely popular.”

They added that the stronger aspects of the visitor experience include “first class members of staff,” “the colourful Coffee Shop” and “the overall standard of cleanliness”, while also speaking positively about the Museum’s community events, stating that they hope their recommendations will help to “continue the growth in visitor numbers to this interesting attraction, which consistently provides an enjoyable visit for a wide range of age groups”.

The Museum of Cannock Chase has a wide selection of activities this summer. Yoga and mindfulness sessions will be available from the start of September, while weekly Time Travellers sessions, which transport children back to a whole host of exciting moments in world history, are running throughout August.
